What Would Jesus Do

QUESTION: Is What Would Jesus Do apparel effective?

ANSWER:

We continue to see people wearing "What Would Jesus Do" apparel, but is it effective? Does the Bible say anything about wearing Christian t-shirts, bracelets, and so on? Consider the following points:

  • What is your purpose for wearing Christian apparel? Is your motive pure? Is your main purpose to witness to the unsaved or to make a statement to other believers? Perhaps your apparel serves as a reminder to you of how to live the Christian life.

  • Do your actions line up with the message of your apparel? Consider whether you truly believe the message you are promoting. Are you willing to live up to your statement? Remember, whether you are wearing Christian apparel or not, you are a representative of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God." Are you a living ambassador for Christ?

  • Does your apparel convey gentleness and respect? 1 Peter 3:15 says, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." If your Christian apparel would be considered disrespectful or hateful, it does the cause of Christ harm instead of good. Before you wear Christian apparel, ask yourself, "If I did not know God, would seeing this message cause me to grow closer to accepting Christ or farther away from Him?"
Is Christian apparel effective? It depends on the message you are conveying, why you are wearing it, and how you live your life. When all these things are considered and put into practice, wearing Christian apparel can be very effective!

What do you think?
We have all sinned and deserve God’s judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
