The cost of discipleship - What do I do? I was disowned by my family!
The cost of discipleship can sometimes be very high. Many disciples of Jesus Christ have paid by losing their own lives. But for most of us, the cost of discipleship may not involve death, but it can be very painful - even leading to loss of relationships, such as being disowned by your family. How do we endure the cost of discipleship? The best way is to remember the promises of the Lord. He told us that if we followed Him, we would endure any affliction, trial, pain, and suffering.
The cost of following Jesus is to put Him first above all and anyone else. Jesus said, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life - he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26-27). He also told us that the world would hate us because it first hated Him (John 15:18-19).
If your family has disowned you, the best person to seek comfort from during this time is the Lord. Not only can He encourage you, He has even brought you into a new family, His family, who can help during this time as well through love. "'Who are my mother and my brothers?' he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother'" (Mark 3:33-35).
Be sure to find a good Bible-teaching church home, get into a small group, surround yourself with others who are full of the love of Christ. They can pray for you and encourage you. Never stop praying for your family since Jesus said, "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44).
